DIMENSIONS OF ACCULTURATION IN BHARATI MUKHERJEE’S DESIRABLE DAUGHTERS – A STUDY
Abstract
Bharati Mukherjee, being one of the pioneers of Indian diaspora writing, projects various dimensions of the process of acculturation in her works, and she provides a comprehensive picture of immigrant life experience especially that of Indian Women in the United States of America. Her novel, Desirable Daughters narrates the story of two sisters named, Padma and Tara who approach the challenge of acculturation from diabolically opposite perspectives. Yet, they represent the realistic predicaments involved in the process, and as such becomes significant in understanding immigrant life experience. This paper aims at understanding how Mukherjee presents the challenge involved in acculturation, and how individuals face those challenges in a variety of ways.
