THE EVOLUTION OF SOCIAL WORK: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS THROUGH THE LENS OF SOCIAL SCIENCE DISCOURSES
Abstract
This research paper critically analyses the evolution of social work through the lens of social science discourses. Beginning with an exploration of its historical foundations, the paper examines the transition of social work from charity-based initiatives to a profession addressing systemic issues. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives, including Marxist, feminist, and postcolonial critiques, the paper highlights the complexities of social work practice in addressing power dynamics and inequalities. Challenges such as incorporating intersectionality and diversity, alongside opportunities for innovation and collaboration, are explored. The paper concludes with reflections on the implications for policy and practice, emphasising the importance of continued research, education, and advocacy in advancing social justice and human rights within the field of social work.
