Abstract

The present article discusses Shīʿī hymns in Iraq, some Persian Gulf countries and Lebanon as broadcast in the numerous Shīʿī satellite stations and websites. The hymns consist of lines of poetry or literary prose recited with mournful melodies. The hymns are recited at various Shīʿī religious occasions by a singer called al-rādūd. The hymns express Shīʿī religious ideas or address various social issues. The article discusses the concept of Shīʿī hymns and their role in the spread of the Shīʿī creed. It surveys the evolution of Shīʿī hymns from their beginnings, when their recital was limited to the ḥusayniyyas, until the present, when they appear in video clips. The article also discusses the hymns' many themes, mostly taken from the doctrines of Twelver Shīʿism, and their effects on the believers.
