THE GROWING PHENOMENON OF TATTOOING AMONG HEZBOLLAH SHIITES IN LEBANON
Abstract
This article discusses the growing phenomenon of tattooing among Shiite[1] youth in Lebanon, particularly young members of Hezbollah. After examining definitions of tattooing past and present and the position taken on tattooing by Sunnis and Shiites, it identifies the most common images and words that appear on tattoos obtained by young Shiites in Lebanon. With their varied forms and expressions, these tattoos are derived from symbols, sayings, and beliefs of the Shiite community. The article analyses these forms and expressions, examining their religious and social significance and meanings. It also explores the recent increase in this phenomenon, which stems overall from the desire to express pride in belonging to the Shiite sect in general, and to Hezbollah in particular, to declare Hezbollah’s political and ideological stance, and to affirm their adherence to Shiite beliefs.
