LOOSE SCULPTURES OF PALLAVAS IN VILLPURAM DISTRICT: PROSPERITY AND PENANCE
Abstract
This article has mainly focused on the significance of loose sculptures Pallavas in Villupuram district. VIllupuram district ranked 6th place in terms of the highest population size among the districts. Villupuram district formed on 30th September 1993 by bifurcate the erstwhile composite South Arcot district. Sculptures are the symbol of identity which depicted the sacred life of the people and their tradition. Villupuram District has the historic essence which engulfs the pre historic to modern period. The majority of the inhabitants devoted the Hinduism of their religion, and glorified for long years. Moreover, this district has enthralled the sacred spaces and sacred places both Saivisim and Vaishnavism. The temples are the ware house of sculptures, also it indentified on the natural organs like rivers and hills. The sculptures almost all found in this region carved both the wall of slab stones, and described the God and Goddesses image or the mythological history of the past. The portrait is not only exhibiting the religion also the socio, economic and cultural views. The loose sculptures have given the clear picture of prosperity and penance on yesteryear.
