RETHINKING THE MARRIAGE RITUAL IN THE TOTO COMMUNITY: AN INTROSPECTION

Abstract

The Totos are considered to be one of the tribal communities in India. The Toto tribes have their own unique social systems, codes and cultural practices. The marriage ritual of the Toto is in many ways similar to the rituals of the Himalayan tribes.  This paper is a descriptive and analytical work on the marital ritual and customs of the tribe.  Various types of traditional as well modern marriages have been discussed in this paper.  Due to the growing influence of non-Totos in the neighbouring area there have been certain changes and modification in their customs.  This paper has been based on the interview method in order to get the first hand and authentic view on the marriage rituals practiced by them.
